Selected projects

Real projects. Measured performance.

A selection from more than twenty years across previous companies, roles and collaborations. The purpose is to show scale, judgement and operational learning, with roles stated clearly and original sources linked where available.

Interior of the completed off-grid barn conversion

Five-bedroom off-grid family home

Off-Grid Barn Conversion

A quoted grid connection of more than £100,000 was replaced by an integrated energy system: 26.8 kWp of solar PV, 41.4 kWh nominal battery storage, air-source heating and automatic LPG generator support.

The important achievement was not the component list. Electrical capacity was coordinated with the heating engineer so a large home could remain comfortable through the shorter days of winter.

Commercial three-phase mini-grid

Scottish Woodlands

A 43 kWp solar array, 91 kWh battery and 45 kVA three-phase inverter system supporting a remote forestry and training site without mains electricity.

The design had to serve machinery and three-phase loads, not just light domestic consumption. Monitoring and remote control supported reliable operation at a site where interruption carried real commercial consequences.

Research-led buildings

SOLCER House & Active Classroom

Energy-positive demonstrators developed with university and industry teams through the Buildings as Power Stations programme. Ian's work involved renewable generation, inverter and battery-storage integration, helping turn research intent into operating systems.

HEM concept study

The Off-Grid Barn Conversion of the Future

An aspirational but technically grounded design for a comfortable family barn: 30 kWp of complementary solar, exposed-site 6 kW wind, 60 kWh of modelled storage and a whole-house heat strategy. Compare annual energy balance, generator use, flexible demand and winter resilience.

A wider evidence base

More than a handful of showcase projects.

Ian designed every system in a private monitored portfolio of 127 installations, including at least 120 off-grid systems. Individual client data remains confidential. Aggregated lessons are used to test assumptions about solar and wind generation, battery behaviour, heating demand, controls, backup runtime and real household use.

Apply the evidence

Use past performance to make a better early decision.

Every new site is different. The value of experience is knowing which assumptions need to be tested before money is committed.
